SanghaSeva | Meditation in Action: Earth Care: Tree Planting Retreat

Devon, UK
19 - 25 February, 2024

Return to Coming Up Events

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in this project. Here are further details of the retreat. We have tried to keep it as brief as possible, and such things as how to get there will be given to you after your registration. There is a registration form at the end of this page. If you wish to participate please complete it.

What will happen on the retreat?

This is the third time we have teamed up with Moor Trees for a meditation in action retreat in Devon. This is a great opportunity to help this small local charity in its noble work of rewilding and resourcing the natural environment.

During the five day retreat we will spend four full days of mindful work volunteering in the tree nursery and planting areas of Moor Trees. The middle day will be a rest day at Eden Rise where we will immerse in silent and still meditation practice.

The aim of the retreat

“The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is now” - Anon

This retreat is a chance for us to offer our compassionate care to our living planet.

Being in nature and working on the land can be a deeply satisfying and healing experience. When combined with contemplation, presence and spirited company, caring for the earth can become a profound and symbolic act of giving and receiving, of nourishing and being nourished, a celebration of life, a gesture of love.

We hope this opportunity to work communally, close to the earth, will allow us to more directly experience our inter-connectedness with all of life.

Suggested schedule for work days

Our days together will include space for silent meditation and meditation in action. The working meditation will include time for both working in silence, and in conversation. Our evening meal will be prepared and served back at our shared accommodation by our cooks. The evenings will include discussions and reflections, and we’ll close the day with another meditation.

Facilitators

We wish the facilitation of this retreat to provide a safe environment that will allow each of us to freely offer our wisdom and support to each other. We envision this retreat as an experiment of living and working together, with each of us participating and contributing to the fullness of the retreat.
Our facilitators offer their time and energy freely and do not receive any payment for what they do. You are welcome to offer them a donation at the end of the retreat. See below for more information about supporting the facilitators.

This retreat will be facilitated by Nathan Glyde and Zohar Lavie.

Practical details

Food

The food will be vegan. We can accommodate gluten-free diets.

Please let us know if you have other dietary needs, and we'll let you know if we can support that directly, or if you will need to bring items to supplement the menu of the retreat.

Accommodation

We will stay at Eden Rise, a stunning and peaceful retreat centre in the beautiful Devon countryside near Totnes. We will have our own kitchen and meditation space. This will allow us to take meals together, meditate, have group discussions and time to process our experience.

Cost

We are doing the best we can to keep the costs as low as possible. To make the retreat accessible to all we also have an assistance fund.

The standard rate is £250; this covers the actual costs of the retreat. But does not include bedding (that is £10 more for the week).

Use our assistance fund if you would like to come but cannot afford the rates above. Please don't hesitate to contact us for further assistance with the costs.

Deposit

To secure your place on this retreat we require a non-refundable deposit of £80. The remainder will be paid in December 2023. The deposit helps us to know we can cover the accommodation costs we need to book in advance.

Dana

The cost of this retreat does not include a fee for the facilitators. They are offering their time and wisdom as part of an ancient system of ‘Dana’- an old word from before the time of the Buddha meaning ’generosity’. This is a gift economy in which teachings are offered freely, and those who come to hear them are invited to offer donations to support the facilitators to continue offering more in the future. We will explain more about this in our booking materials and in the week.

If you are touched by this project but cannot join us, you could also help by sponsoring someone else to go, please contact us for further information on how to do this. Or visit our support page directly
